Club Chairman’s Message

Last year was pivotal for tennis and tournament development at Clearwater Bay. We not only rebranded the tournament and increased the prize money, but we also attracted high-calibre ATP doubles players to participate.

This year, The Clearwater Bay Champions Cup promises to be even more exciting as we welcome back some returning players while upholding the tournament tradition. Our goal is to establish this event as the premier local tennis competition, providing excellent sporting enjoyment for the Hong Kong community.

As said, focus of The Clearwater Bay Champions Cup is doubles. And among the invites sent to ATP touring players, this year we are happy to see the return of last year’s champion Yuki Bhambri from India (highest ATP Doubles ranking 42 and ATP 250 Gstaad Winner, July 2024), runner-up John-Patrick Smith from Australia (highest ATP Doubles ranking 52 and Winner of Challenger Cary, August 2024), and also Huang Tsung-Hao, (the World University Games Men’s Doubles gold medallist in Chengdu 2023 and ITF M25 Tianjin Winner, July 2024)

Throughout the years, our Champions Cup has brought exceptional luck to participating talents in the global tennis scene. Let me share a few examples here:

  • Joe Salisbury came in 2018 – then at a career-high ranking of #30. Since our event he has reached world #1 and won the Doubles titles of Australian Open in 2020 and the US Open Doubles titles (2021,22,23).
  • Rohan Bopanna came in 2018 with a career-high of #37 in the world, and he has reached world #1 in 2024.
  • John Peers came in 2015 and was at that time ranked 8 in the world, and he went on to reach a career high of #2 and won the titles at Australian Open in 2017, and the gold Medal in the Paris Olympics in 2024.
  • Our former ambassador Coleman Wong played last year when he was at a career high of #253. Since our event, he has reached a career high of #149 in the world.
  • And last but not least is last year’s champion Yuki Bhambri – he was at a career high of #60 when he came, and is now at a career high of #42 in the world.

As Chairman, I am pleased to witness how the Club contributes to the participants’ career growth and see them take significant steps forward in their professional journeys.

We believe that The Clearwater Bay Champions Cup plays a vital role in promoting local tennis development. It offers Hong Kong players and audience a rare opportunity to watch world-renowned professionals compete and to learn from them in a world-class event right in our Club.

Additionally, as a testament to the Club’s commitment to sports development and community outreach, the Clearwater Bay Tennis Academy provides venues and facilities to local schools, particularly those that may lack the resources to expose their students to tennis. We are deeply committed to nurturing young talent by offering experiential tennis programmes to underprivileged students.

This year’s Champions Cup is set on December 7th and 8th – I look forward to seeing all tennis lovers from Hong Kong and around the world either in person and via live stream here and on our YouTube channel.
